A Perfect Circle Regarding the Canon
Retroactive Discoveries of Canon Inaccuracies (reference: X and Tokyo Babylon manga)
Clearing of Canon Accuracies in Story
Chapter Specific
7 March 2005: Regarding Setsuka and Seishirou (Chapter 15 “Crossing a Schism” and Chapter 18 "Creating a Sociopath"); canon inaccuracy confirmed
After writing the back-story for Seishirou and Setsuka, I found the translation of Seishirou’s CLAMP character file in which he talks about his relationship with his mother and reveals that he did not meet her until he was nine years old. This is clearly out of sync with the back-story I created for Setsuka. And this is what happens when I don’t research everything. I’ll just assume that in A Perfect Circle, Setsuka and Seishirou’s history is an alternate-history offshoot.
Overall
18 December 2005: Edits made to canon mistakes
I have changed the incorrect dates, cigarette brands, ages, locations, etc, to correspond with the canon. That was fun.
9 November 2005: Regarding Kamui!Fuuma's personality
More manga have been released since two years ago, when this started. Given that critical details about Fuuma's true nature have been revealed, his character is in need of streamlining. This problem lies mostly in the beginning of the story.
[Edit] 6 November 2005: Time lapse between Tokyo Babylon and X
There are two commonly-held theories on this one: Tokyo Babylon ends in 1990, in which case it would be a nine-year lapse, Subaru would be twenty-five, and Seishirou would be thirty-four, and Tokyo Babylon ends in 1992, in which case there was a seven-year lapse, Subaru is twenty-three, and Seishirou is thirty-two. In APC, I used to assume the 1992-based lapse, but after confirming that the nine-year lapse is accurate, I will edited dates to correspond.
29 June 2005: [what] Sevens?
Subaru and Seishirou smoke Mild Sevens, not Wild 7’s, as I originally thought. This is a common misconception. There is no such brand as Wild 7, whereas Mild Seven is a very popular Japanese brand. I should have noticed that when I did searches and turned up zero results. This has also been edited
7 March 2005: Regarding Kamui’s and Fuuma’s grades; canon discrepancy
Subaru’s Voice pointed out that Kamui is a sophomore (which would be first-year high school student) at the beginning of X, as noted in one of the earlier volumes of the manga, while in the story I assume that he is a junior (second-year high school student). Honestly, I didn’t remember this bit of information, given that it’s been a while since I read the first volumes of X, so it is keen observation on Subaru’s Voice’s part. This story takes place after volume 14 of the manga, starting in what I assume is the late springtime, so Kamui would be a junior by the time of APC.
Fuuma, therefore, should be going into his senior year (third year high school), but in APC he is held back a grade and is therefore with Kamui, Sorata, and Arashi. I always assumed when writing the story that Fuuma was about a year older than Kamui, and that Kotori was Kamui’s age.
7 March 2005: Eye colors; even the canon is unclear about this
Given how many different eye colors the four main characters have in the manga, artbooks, TV show, movie, etc, I have chosen constant eye colors based on the classics / what I like the best.
- Shirou Kamui’s APC eye color: gold (TV series, several artbook pictures; in retrospect I should have made it purple)
- Sumeragi Subaru’s APC eye color: green (Tokyo Babylon, t3h classic, period)
- Monou Fuuma’s APC eye color: red (TV series, mostly because I just like it. I know most of the time, it is gold.)
- Sakurazuka Seishirou’s APC eye color: amber-brown (Tokyo Babylon, pretty much everything else, though in X it looks darker)
7 March 2005: Heights; even the canon is unclear about this
Given the shifting nature of the canon on this topic, after analysis of the height differences in the manga, these are the assumed heights for the main characters in APC:
- Shirou Kamui: 5’ 4” (163 cm)
- Sumeragi Subaru: 5’ 9” (175 cm)
- Monou Fuuma: 6’ 1” (186 cm)
- Sakurazuka Seishirou: 6’ 2” (188 cm)
7 March 2005: Regarding Seishirou’s blindness; conscious deviation from Tokyo Babylon canon
After doing some research on mono-vision, I confirmed CLAMP’s claim that Seishirou will eventually go blind because of his injury in Tokyo Babylon is a medical inaccuracy. He will not. Therefore, in APC Seishirou’s eyesight is only as bad as it ever was in Tokyo Babylon (with glasses), and with all other detriments outlined in the above discussion such as impaired depth perception and limited field-of-vision. I also assume in APC that Subaru has been misinformed about Seishirou’s blindness, so the Tokyo Babylon arc regarding the seeing eye dog happened. I also assume that, sometime during the past nine years, Seishirou’s doctors were sued for malpractice.
