Natsume, or Sabrina, as she is known in English adaptations of Pokémon, is the gym leader of Saffron City Gym, specializing in psychic Pokémon. Aside from being obligatorily reserved and aloof, as is trademark to anybody with brainy tendencies, little is revealed about Sabrina’s personality in the Game Boy adaptations.

In the anime adaptation of Pokémon, Sabrina maintains much the same personality, and is a chronically introverted young woman who spent all of her childhood developing her psychic powers without ever making any friends. Her chronic introversion split her personality into two facets: the hardened, analytical trainer, and a lonely little girl who wants friends, represented by the doll that Sabrina always carries. Ash is able to soften her personality and win an impossible battle by making her laugh with Haunter, which, her assumed-father says, is the first time he has ever seen her laugh.

Though obviously exaggerated, Sabrina is one of the clever allegory-characters in the Pokémon anime, representing those nerdy children who isolate themselves from their less intelligent peers and become resentful and lonely. She is manipulative and ‘plays’ with people – literally. She turns them into dolls and sticks them in a dollhouse. Interpret that symbolism at will. It isn’t difficult to decipher.

In Pokémon Red, Blue, Yellow, Leaf Green, and Fire Red, Sabrina is the keeper of the Marsh Badge, which makes Pokémon under level 70 obey you. She also coughs up TM 46, Psywave, after you defeat her.
