The first thing to know about Dilandau Albatou is that he is stark raving insane. The second thing to know is that he likes fire. A lot. For some reason, the higher-ups in Zaibach thought it would be a brilliant idea to place this beautiful fifteen-year-old boy in charge of a battalion of soldiers and give him a guymelef, and then, better yet, send him on missions that require self-control and subtlety. He actually holds his own insofar as surface diplomacy (intimidation) is concerned for the first part of the show, but he just cracks more and more as the story progresses. His idea of a battle involves being given free reign to torch everything and kill everybody, screaming the entire time, but since this idea conflicts with his superior’s (Folken’s) idea of a battle, he locks horns with the higher-ups quite often. Folken is the only Zaibach army authority not terrified of Dilandau, so the two do not get along well. Actually, anybody who isn’t terrified of Dilandau is somebody Dilandau will dislike. Though standoffish, prideful, selfish, and downright cruel, deep down Dilandau is just a severely messed-up, lonely, and terrified child in a fifteen-year-old boy’s body. He is one of the most tragic characters in Escaflowne, in the end a symbol and strong case for the show’s discouragement of artificial fate alteration. He’s also just damn pretty and damn fun, end of story.
Dilandau is the leader of the Dragonslayers, Zaibach’s elite squad specializing mostly in special operations and guymelef-related missions. Through the Escaflowne storyline, they are usually sent to capture the “White Dragon” (Escaflowne, insofar as Dornkirk is concerned as long as they are alive). It is through these missions that he meets the young king of Fanelia, Van Fanel, and develops a deep and utter loathing ever since Van scarred his face in (self-defense) a battle on the Vione. This loathing has spawned a loyal Dilandau X Van yaoi fandom. As far as Escaflowne yaoi fandom is concerned, Dilandau certainly gets around: there is also a large following for him sleeping with all of his Dragonslayers and the strategos of the Vione, Folken Fanel, as well as Allen Schezar. On that note, Dilandau has a long-standing loathing of Allen, probably because Allen is not scared of him like most people. Further details on Dilandau’s background and his role in the later part of the storyline are spoilers, but it would be safe to call him an albino lab rat for all practical purposes.
